What Is Programmatic SEO?

Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating many search-targeted pages from a template and a structured dataset, so each page answers a specific long-tail query such as "[app] integration with [app]" or "[currency] to [currency] converter". It works when every page carries genuinely useful, distinct data, and fails when the pages are near-duplicates.

Also called: pSEO, programmatic pages, templated SEO pagesUpdated

Common programmatic page types

  • Integrations: one page per app pairing, describing what the two tools do together.
  • Comparisons and alternatives: one page per competitor, built from a structured feature and pricing table.
  • Locations: one page per city or region, with local data.
  • Converters and calculators: one page per input pair, such as currencies or units.
  • Audiences or use cases: one page per niche, with that niche's problems and channels.

This site uses the approach for its niche pages and comparisons: each is built from a typed dataset with niche-specific or competitor-specific content.

The risk: scaled content abuse

Google's spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users, and give examples including using generative AI to create many pages without adding value, and scraping feeds or search results to generate pages. Programmatic SEO falls on the wrong side of that line when pages differ only by a swapped keyword.

Large page counts can also waste crawl budget and leave many URLs as "Discovered - currently not indexed" in Search Console.

How to do it well

  1. Start with the data, not the template. If you do not have something distinct to say on each page, do not publish it.
  2. Check demand per pattern. Make sure people search the pattern ("X vs Y", "X for Y") before building hundreds of pages.
  3. Launch a small batch, watch indexing and engagement, then expand.
  4. Write the parts a template cannot, such as intros, FAQs and verdicts, for the pages that matter most.
  5. Link pages into clusters so they support each other's topical authority.

Illustrative examples

Hypothetical scenarios that show how the term applies. They are not reports of real cases.

  • An automation tool publishes a page for each pair of apps it connects, each describing real triggers and actions for that pair.
  • A site publishes 5,000 "best plumber in [city]" pages with identical text and only the city name changed: thin, near-duplicate pages at risk under the scaled content policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is programmatic SEO against Google's guidelines?

Not in itself. Google's scaled content policy targets pages made mainly to manipulate rankings without adding value. Template-built pages with distinct, useful data for each query are fine.

How many programmatic pages should I launch at once?

Start small, often a few dozen, and expand once Google indexes them and they get impressions. Launching thousands at once on a new domain often leaves most of them unindexed.
