What Is Topical Authority?
Topical authority is the degree to which a website is seen as a reliable, thorough source on a specific subject, built by covering that subject in depth, linking related pages together and earning links and mentions from other sites in the same field. A site with strong topical authority tends to rank more pages, faster, within its subject.
Also called: topic authority, topical relevance, subject authorityUpdated
A concept, not a single score
Topical authority is an SEO concept rather than one metric you can look up. Google has publicly described a topic authority system for news, and its guidance rewards content that shows depth and first-hand expertise, but there is no "topical authority score" in Search Console. Tools that report one are estimating.
How topical authority is built
- Choose a focused topic close to what you sell, rather than writing about everything.
- Map the questions buyers ask about it, from basic definitions to detailed comparisons.
- Publish a cluster: a broad pillar page plus specific supporting pages, each answering one question well.
- Link the cluster together with descriptive internal links, so readers and crawlers can move between related pages.
- Add first-hand evidence: your own data, screenshots, pricing and examples. See E-E-A-T.
- Earn links and mentions from other sites about the same subject.
Why it matters for a new startup
A new domain cannot outrank established sites on broad terms. It can become the most complete source on a narrow topic, such as "invoicing for freelance designers" rather than "invoicing", and win those searches first. Once a cluster ranks, adjacent topics are easier. Our keyword research guide for a new SaaS shows how to choose the first cluster.
Illustrative examples
Hypothetical scenarios that show how the term applies. They are not reports of real cases.
- A Reddit-marketing tool publishes guides on subreddit rules, finding customers on Reddit and the best subreddits per niche, all linked together, and starts ranking for a cluster of Reddit questions.
- A site that publishes one post about everything from crypto to recipes struggles to rank any of them, because it has no depth on any topic.
Frequently asked questions
How many articles does it take to build topical authority?
There is no fixed number. It takes enough pages to answer the main questions on a topic well, linked together, plus some links from related sites. A narrow topic needs fewer pages than a broad one.
Does topical authority beat backlinks?
They work together. Depth on a topic makes each link more effective, and links from same-topic sites are part of how authority is recognized.
