What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can use it directly as the answer to a question, in places such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and AI-generated answers. The aim is to be the answer people read, not only a link they might click.

Also called: AEO, answer optimizationUpdated

Where AEO came from

The term predates ChatGPT. It grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, when search engines began answering questions directly on the results page or out loud, and publishers wanted their text to be the one chosen. Generative AI widened the idea: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are answer engines too, which is why AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are now often discussed together.

AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO

  • SEO earns rankings and clicks in the list of search results.
  • AEO earns the direct answer: the snippet, the spoken reply, the quoted sentence.
  • GEO earns mentions and citations inside answers written by generative AI, which leans more on third-party sources and brand consistency across the web.

They share a foundation. A page that is crawlable, indexed, clearly structured and trusted is a candidate for all three.

How to optimize for answer engines

  1. Use the question as a heading and answer it in the first sentence or two beneath it, in plain language.
  2. Make answers self-contained. A sentence that only makes sense with the paragraph before it is hard to quote.
  3. Use lists and tables for steps, comparisons and prices; answer engines extract structured content readily.
  4. Add an FAQ section for the follow-up questions buyers ask, with concise answers.
  5. Use structured data that matches visible content, such as FAQPage, HowTo or Product markup, where it genuinely applies.
  6. Keep facts current. Answer engines that quote an outdated price or feature do your brand no favors.

Measuring AEO

For featured snippets and People Also Ask, track the queries where your page appears in those features. For AI answers, track a fixed set of buyer questions across AI assistants and record whether your page or brand is used, as described in our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews.

Illustrative examples

Hypothetical scenarios that show how the term applies. They are not reports of real cases.

  • A glossary page that opens with a one-sentence definition is quoted in a featured snippet for "what is link velocity".
  • A pricing page with a clear table of plans is used by an AI assistant to answer "how much does [product] cost".
  • A support article titled "How do I export invoices to CSV?" answers in its first line and is read aloud by a voice assistant.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap. AEO began with featured snippets and voice answers; GEO is about generative AI answers and puts more weight on third-party citations. Most of the on-page work is shared.

Does AEO reduce clicks to my site?

Sometimes. A direct answer can satisfy a simple question on the results page. For buying questions, being the named answer still builds trust and often earns the click when people want details or pricing.
