How to Get Your Product Recommended by ChatGPT (and Rank in ChatGPT Search)

ChatGPT recommends products it has seen described consistently across trusted sources and can retrieve live. Here is how to become one of them.

How ChatGPT decides what to recommend

When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best tool for X", the answer comes from a mix of two things:

  1. Model knowledge: patterns learned during training from public web text, books, code and other data. Products that were described often and consistently before the training cutoff are more likely to be named from memory.
  2. Live retrieval: when ChatGPT searches the web, it fetches current pages, reads them and cites some of them. This is where newer products can appear quickly.

For a new product, live retrieval is the realistic path in the short term, and training data is the long-term effect of being talked about widely. Both reward the same underlying thing: clear, consistent, credible descriptions of your product across many independent sources.

Step 1: make sure OpenAI can crawl you

OpenAI documents separate crawlers with different jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot: used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. OpenAI states that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • GPTBot: used to crawl content that may be used for training models.
  • ChatGPT-User: used when a user's request causes ChatGPT to visit a page.

Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot-protection rules (some CDN settings block AI crawlers by default). If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot at minimum. Whether you also allow GPTBot is a business decision about training use.

Also make sure you are well indexed by major web search engines, including Bing. ChatGPT search has used third-party search providers alongside OpenAI's own crawler, so pages that are invisible to traditional search engines are less likely to be retrieved. Bing Webmaster Tools takes 10 minutes to set up.

Step 2: fix your entity clarity

AI systems need to understand what your product is. Ambiguity kills recommendations. Check that:

  • Your homepage says, in one plain sentence near the top, what the product is, who it is for, and the main outcome. Example: "Acme is an invoicing tool for freelance designers that sends automatic payment reminders."
  • The same description (same category words, same audience) appears on your About page, social profiles, directory listings, GitHub repo and press mentions.
  • Your brand name is not easily confused with another product. If it is, always pair it with a category ("Acme invoicing").
  • Organization and product structured data on your site is accurate and consistent with those descriptions.

Inconsistency (one site calls you a CRM, another an invoicing app, a third a payments tool) makes it harder for any system to confidently recommend you for a specific need.

Step 3: get described on third-party pages

When ChatGPT searches "best invoicing tool for freelancers", it mostly retrieves listicles, comparison pages, review sites and forum threads, not your homepage. Your goal is to be included, accurately, in the pages it is likely to retrieve.

Priorities:

  1. "Best [category] for [audience]" articles: find the ones that rank in Google and Bing for your target queries and pitch the authors with a specific reason to include you.
  2. Review and alternatives sites: G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, Product Hunt. Complete profiles with the same positioning.
  3. Reddit and forum threads: genuine, helpful mentions in threads where people ask for recommendations. AI answers frequently cite Reddit discussions. Read Reddit marketing for SaaS before posting anything.
  4. Guest articles and podcasts that describe your approach and naturally name the product.
  5. GitHub: a repo with a clear README is a well-crawled description of what you do.

Our GEO service focuses on exactly this: getting your product described consistently in the places AI engines retrieve.

Step 4: publish answer-ready pages

Your own pages still matter, especially when ChatGPT retrieves them for specific comparisons. Pages that get cited tend to:

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences, then elaborate.
  • Use specific facts: prices, limits, supported integrations, setup time, who it is not for.
  • Include comparison tables with named competitors, written fairly.
  • Have clear headings phrased as questions people ask.
  • Show a visible last updated date and keep facts current.

Pages worth creating: "[Your product] vs [competitor]", "[Competitor] alternatives", "Best [category] for [audience]" (yes, including competitors), a pricing page with real numbers, and an honest "who is this for" page.

Step 5: earn the signals that also drive SEO

There is heavy overlap between what ranks in search and what gets retrieved by AI search. Pages that rank well on traditional engines are more likely to be found when ChatGPT searches.

So the classic work still applies:

  • Relevant, editorial backlinks to your key pages.
  • Fast, crawlable pages with clean HTML (content not hidden behind JavaScript that fails).
  • Topical depth: several pages that cover your category thoroughly.

How to track ChatGPT visibility

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT, so build a simple tracker:

  1. Write 20-30 prompts your buyers would ask: "best [category] for [audience]", "[competitor] alternatives", "how do I [job]".
  2. Run each prompt monthly with search enabled, in a fresh chat, and record: mentioned (yes/no), position in the list, how you were described, and which sources were cited.
  3. Note the cited sources. They are your target list for Step 3.
  4. Check analytics for referral traffic from chatgpt.com and other AI assistants, and add "how did you hear about us?" to signup.

Answers vary between runs and users, so look at trends across many prompts, not single responses.

What does not work

  • Hidden text or prompt-injection tricks aimed at AI crawlers. They can be treated as spam by search engines and erode trust if discovered.
  • Fake reviews or sockpuppet Reddit posts. Platforms remove them, and they can poison the descriptions you are trying to build.
  • Mass-produced AI pages about your own product. Volume without substance does not get cited.
  • Expecting instant results. Live retrieval can pick up new pages within days or weeks, but changing how models describe you from memory takes months and many mentions.

Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend a product. What you can do is make your product the easiest, most consistently described answer for a specific need.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not through organic answers. There is no way to buy placement in ChatGPT's organic recommendations. You can influence them only by being accurately and widely described in sources it retrieves and learns from.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

When ChatGPT searches the web, new pages and mentions can be picked up within days or weeks of being indexed. Showing up in answers from the model's own knowledge depends on future training runs and broad coverage, so it takes much longer.

Should I block GPTBot?

Blocking GPTBot limits use of your content for training but does not block OAI-SearchBot, which powers ChatGPT search. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, keep OAI-SearchBot allowed. Whether to allow GPTBot is a business decision.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

The foundations overlap heavily: crawlability, clear content, authority and links. AI search adds more weight to entity clarity, consistent third-party mentions, and answer-first content that is easy to quote.

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

ChatGPT search has relied on third-party search providers, with Bing widely reported as one of them, alongside OpenAI's own crawler. Being well indexed in Bing is a sensible baseline either way.
