How to use the llms.txt Checker

  1. Step 1

    Enter a domain

Yours or any site you want to learn from. For a file in a subfolder, enter its full address, like example.com/docs/llms.txt.

  2. Step 2

We fetch and parse the file

We check the HTTP status, content type and size, then read the file the way the format describes: title, summary, sections and links.

  3. Step 3

    Read the results

Each rule shows as a pass, warning, fail or note, with the lines it refers to and how to fix it.

  4. Step 4

    Fix and check again

Edit the file, upload it and rerun the check, or start over with the llms.txt generator.

What the llms.txt checker tests

The response

  • The file answers HTTP 200 at the address you entered, and any redirects on the way.
  • It is served as text (text/plain or text/markdown), not as an HTML page.
  • Its size: the proposal asks for a file small enough to fit in a model's context.

The format (from llmstxt.org)

  • The file opens with exactly one H1 (# Site name), the only required part.
  • A blockquote summary (> ...) sits directly under the title.
  • Nothing above the first H2 is a heading.
  • Inside each H2 section, every list item starts with a link: - [name](url), with an optional note after a colon.
  • Links are valid web addresses, written in full, and not repeated. No section is left empty.
  • An ## Optional section, if present, holds the links a tool can skip.

The links

  • Up to 10 links, taken from every section in turn, are requested to see whether they work.

The companion file

  • Whether the site also publishes /llms-full.txt. That is for information only.

How to read your score

The score starts at 100 and each problem takes points off. A missing title costs the most. A missing summary, no link sections or an unusable URL cost 10 to 20 points, and smaller format slips cost 2 to 5. Notes cost nothing: they are suggestions, such as adding an Optional section. A missing file, an HTML page or a server error scores 0.

  • 90 to 100, good: the file follows the format closely.
  • 50 to 89, needs work: tools can read it, but some lines will be skipped or misread.
  • Below 50, poor: the file is missing its core parts.

The score is our own measure of how closely a file follows the proposal. No AI company publishes a scoring rule for llms.txt, so treat it as a checklist, not a ranking signal.

Common llms.txt errors and how to fix them

  • The address returns a web page. Your framework's catch-all route or 404 page answers /llms.txt, sometimes with status 200. Put a real file in the folder your site serves static files from (public/ in Next.js) so the address returns text.
  • Request refused (403 or 429). Bot protection or a firewall rule challenges requests that do not come from a browser, so tools never see the file. Allow /llms.txt: it is a public file meant for automated readers.
  • Wrong content type. A file labelled text/html or application/octet-stream may show as one long paragraph or download instead of opening. Serve it as text/plain; charset=utf-8 or text/markdown; charset=utf-8. Most hosts do this automatically for a .txt file.
  • Plain text inside sections. Instructions and bullet points without links belong above the first H2. Inside a section, every item should start with [name](url).
  • Relative links. /pricing only works for a reader that knows where the file lives. Write https://example.com/pricing.
  • Notes after a dash. The format puts a colon between a link and its note: - [Pricing](https://example.com/pricing): Plans and limits.
  • A copy of the sitemap. Hundreds of links defeat the purpose. Keep the pages that answer real questions and move the rest under ## Optional.

llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml

  • robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they may fetch. It is the file that allows or blocks AI bots such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot; check yours with the AI crawler checker.
  • sitemap.xml lists the URLs you want search engines to know about, every one of them.
  • llms.txt is a curated, readable overview of your most useful pages for language models. It does not allow or block anything.

They work side by side, and llms.txt does not replace either one.

Who reads llms.txt today

Be clear-eyed about it. Google's guide to its generative AI features says it is fine to keep an llms.txt file, but Google Search ignores it, so it neither helps nor hurts your rankings. We have not found documentation from other AI search products saying they use it to choose sources.

Other readers do exist. AI companies publish llms.txt files for their own developer docs (OpenAI and Anthropic do), and so do companies such as Stripe, Vercel and GitHub. Chrome's Lighthouse has an experimental Agentic Browsing category with an llms.txt audit: it flags a server error on the file and marks a missing file as not applicable. Coding assistants and AI agents can read the file when someone points them at your site.

So llms.txt is worth the hour it takes, and no substitute for clear pages and mentions on sites people trust. The llms.txt guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I validate my llms.txt file?

Enter your domain in the checker above. It fetches /llms.txt, confirms it is served as text, then checks the format: one H1 title first, a blockquote summary, H2 sections whose items are links in the form "- [name](url): note", valid full URLs, no duplicates or empty sections. It also tests up to 10 of the links.

Why does the checker say my llms.txt is an HTML page?

Your server answered /llms.txt with a web page, usually a 404 page or your app's catch-all route, sometimes with status 200. Add a real llms.txt file to your static or public folder so the address returns plain text, then check again.

Which websites use llms.txt?

Many developer documentation sites. When we checked in October 2026, llmstxt.org, OpenAI's developer docs, Anthropic's Claude docs, Stripe's docs, Vercel and GitHub all published one. Directories listed on llmstxt.org collect more examples, and you can run any of them through this checker to see how they are built.

What content type should llms.txt be served with?

text/plain or text/markdown, with charset=utf-8. text/markdown is the registered media type for Markdown (RFC 7763), and text/plain is what most hosts send for a .txt file automatically. Avoid text/html, which makes browsers and some tools treat the file as a web page.

Can llms.txt be in a subfolder?

Yes. The current version of the proposal allows a file at any path, such as /docs/llms.txt, covering the pages under that path; when more than one file applies, tools should use the most specific one. Enter the file's full address in the checker to test it.

Does a missing llms.txt hurt my site?

No. Google Search ignores the file, and Lighthouse marks a missing file (404) as not applicable. A server error is different: Lighthouse flags it, so make /llms.txt return either the file or a plain 404.

Does llms.txt replace robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls which URLs crawlers may fetch, including AI crawlers. llms.txt only describes your most useful pages; it cannot allow or block anything.
